Team led by first-year student Satoki Ogiso (Engineering, Information and Systems; faculty advisor: Prof. Koichi Mizutani) wins merit award in IBM Bluemix Challenge

The team “aclab team a,” made up of four students from the Ph.D. Program in Empowerment Informatics and the Graduate School of Systems and Information Engineering (Satoki Ogiso, Ph.D. Program in Empowerment Informatics; Takuji Kawagishi, Master’s Program in Service Engineering; Takuya Aoki, Department of Intelligent Interaction Technologies; and Seiya Furukawa, Department of Intelligent Interaction Technologies) submitted an entry to the IBM Bluemix Challenge, a development contest that accepted entries May 12-August 12, 2014. Their entry was an app they developed called Sleef, which links the Jawbone Up wearable sensor with calendar data to provide advice on the optimal hours of sleep for the user’s physical condition in addition to information on hours and quality of sleep.

At the awards ceremony held September 12, 2014 during IBM XCITE Autumn, aclab team a was chosen as one of three winners from among roughly 300 entrants and presented with a merit award. This prize reflects the judges’ high esteem for their idea for the app, which incorporates the distinguishing features of the development environment, and for its implementation over a short period of time. They were the only students among the winners. The other winners were employees of IBM and Hitachi Solutions.

After the awards ceremony, they took part in a panel discussion on the development contest, in which the three winners and three judges (Hiroshi Yokotsuka, Advisor, Tokio Marine & Nichido Systems Co., Ltd.; Jun’ichi Nino, Publickey; and Norishige Morimoto, Director, IBM Research – Tokyo) discussed topics including the future of cloud development.

The team “aclab team a” was selected as a merit prize winner from among roughly 300 entrants. Congratulations!
