Title: Human-human motor interaction through a compliant connection

Abstract:
Physical interaction is crucial to obtaining new skills such as learning to walk, or to reacquire lost ones in rehabilitation and physiotherapy. However, the benefits of physical interaction itself are poorly understood. Using a novel interaction paradigm of two partners interacting through a (virtual) compliant spring connection, we provide evidence of interaction improving the tracking performance of both the better and worse partners. We also demonstrate that interaction with a human leads to faster learning of a visuomotor rotation than when practicing either alone or with robotic guidance.
