Haptics in Empowerment Informatics workshop held

On November 18 and 20, 2014, a Haptics in Empowerment Informatics workshop was held at the Tsukuba International Congress Center, organized by the Ph.D. Program in Empowerment Informatics (EMP). This workshop was held as part of Asia Haptics, the first international conference to be held in the Asia region on haptics, an academic area serving as a foundation for empowerment informatics.

Following a welcome message and description of the Program by EMP Program Leader Prof. Hiroo Iwata, the workshop featured lectures and question-and-answer sessions by international researchers who are leaders in the field of haptics: Edward Colgate (Northwestern University), Marc Ernst (University of Bielefeld), Matthias Harders (University of Innsbruck), Hong Z. Tan (Purdue University), and Vincent Hayward (Pierre and Marie Curie University). These sparked lively discussion of haptics and empowerment informatics, in a venue crowded with more than 200 participants.

The Asia Haptics conference is intended to serve as an opportunity for sharing of research results by enabling researchers to experience the results of presenters’ research through demonstrations. It was a valuable opportunity for EMP students who participated and presented, as they had the opportunity to receive technical guidance directly from guest speakers who are world-class researchers.
