Title: Orofacial somatosensory system

Abstract: Orofacial somatosensory system has different characteristics from the other skeletal system since lack of muscle proprioceptors in most of orofacial muscles. Recent finding suggests that somatosensory inputs associated with facial skin deformation play an important role to provide kinesthetic information in speech motor control and learning. One intriguing role of these inputs is to change the processing of speech sounds suggesting somatosensory inputs associated with facial skin deformation may works not only for the tuning of motor processing, but also for the perception of speech sounds. A series of experiment by observing responses to the somatosensory perturbation associated with facial skin deformation shows a fundamental role of facial skin sensation in speech motor learning and perception. The results suggest tight linkage between speech production and perception mechanisms through somatosensory function.
