Title: How we can overcome the deep valley between basic research and industrialization

Summary: “Is basic research sustainable in a business organization?” There is no single answer to this question. This is due to the possibility that the meanings of basic research could differ between a university and a business.Basic research in a business needs to be planned with an eye toward commercialization based on underlying requests from stakeholders, which would seem to differ from the bottom-up approach to identifying issues employed in academia. This seminar welcomes two lecturers with valuable practical experience both in basic research in a business organization and in linking the results of basic research to commercialization, as well as a professor responsible for industry-academy partnership at the University of Tsukuba, to discuss the ideal forms of basic research intended for commercial purposes, issues in linking basic research to commercialization, and the vision of the PhD that will be in demand in the future.
