Information of Interdisciplinary Workshop for Leading Students 2018 (IW4LS)

Purpose

The purpose of the IW4LS workshop is to stimulate interdisciplinary exchange and strengthen future collaboration between students, faculty and staff from the leading programs at Nagoya University, Waseda University, Toyohashi University of Technology and University of Tsukuba. Besides an information exchange meeting and the introduction of the leading program from each university, students will work and discuss in groups to imagine what the future will look like in 20 years from now.

Event Outline

Date: 2018/4/6 (Fri)- 4/7 (Sat)

Venue: Empowerment Studio at University of Tsukuba and Research Building B
Participation fee: As information exchange fee,

Student 3,000 JPY,Faculty and Staff 5,500 JPY (including lunch fee for staffs)

# Representatives from each university should pay on arrival at the reception desk.

Targeted student: about 15 students from each university

Theme of Group work

A lot of things seen in science fiction have been realized since our childhood. How do we imagine the future in 20 years from now? What will we create to change people’s lives?

We will try to come up with answer to these questions and consider future lifestyle, devices, services, and systems. Each team will create prototypes using cardboard etc., and present their future world in form of a play in the final presentation.

Tools for Group works

The IW4LS-2018 organizers prepare the following items for each team:

Accommodation

– Easel pad
– Post-it (75 x 75 mm, 75 x 127 mm)
– Water-based pen 8 colors (1 set)

Materials

– Cardboard
– Styrofoam (various types of plate and column)
– PP sheets each color
– Colored drawing paper
– Bamboo trees
– Straw

Tools

– 2 cutter AL type
– 1 cutter mat (A3 size)
– 2 scissors
– 2 curing tapes
– 2 craft tapes
– 1 styrol cutter
– 1 bond for woodworking (net 180 g)
– 1 glue for polystyrene
– 2 cello tape
– Glue stick (mainly for papers)

# Equipment such as laser cutter, UV printer cannot be used.

Accommodation

The IW4LS-2018 organizers reserved Tsukuba Kenshu Center as accommodation place after the group work on 4/6. There is no need to arrange for accommodation individually.

Be sure to check out by 8:20 a.m. on Saturday, April 7th, to get together with your teammates and go to the EMP studio with them following EMP students. We recommend you to take a bus leaving at “Tsukuba Medical Center Mae” bus stop at 8:43 a.m.
※A Bus Schedule will be provided when you check in for the workshop.
※Please be sure to take a bus at the “Tsukuba Medical Center Mae” bus stop, not other bus stops such as “Medical Center Hospital” or “University Tsukuba Hospital Iriguchi.” It takes approximately 15 minutes’ walk from the “Tsukuba Medical Center Mae” bus stop to the Tsukuba Kenshu Center.

Check-in time: until midnight, Check-out time: until 10:00 a.m

Dinner and breakfast are not included in the accommodation fee. The Tsukuba Kenshu Center provides breakfast but you need to make a reservation when you check in and to pay extra money for breakfast. In addition, you can get a dinner/breakfast at a convenience store (nearest one is “Family Mart”) or a restaurant. We will provide you the map of restaurants around the Tsukuba Kenshu Center when you check in for the workshop.

Please pay the accommodation fee (3,700 yen) in cash by yourself.

Take the Tsukuba Express from Akihabara Station to Tsukuba Station.
From bus stop 6 at the Tsukuba Center, take the bus bound for “Tsukuba Daigaku Chuo” (筑波大学中央) or “the University Loop-line On-campus Bus” [Tsukuba Daigaku Junkan Bus] (clockwise) (筑波大学循環バス 右回り)to “Dai-San Area Mae”. From bus stop “Dai-san Area Mae” (第三エリア前) , 3 minutes walk to Empowerment studio.

To Accommodation


From bus stop “Dai-san Area Mae” (第三エリア前) , take the bus bound for “Tsukuba Center” (つくばセンター) or “Tsuchiura Station” (土浦駅) . Get off at “Tsukuba Medical Center Mae” (メディカルセンター前) . From the bus stop to accommodation is about 10 minutes on foot.
