Second-year students Jun Nishida, Kosuke Sato, and Hikaru Takatori were presented with the University President’s award.

On Wednesday, May 21, 2015, Jun Nishida, Kosuke Sato, and Hikaru Takatori, second-year students of the Ph.D. Program in Empowerment Informatics (EMP), were presented with the University President’s award.

The team won first prize overall in the 2014 International Collegiate Virtual Reality Contest (IVRC2014), held May-October 2014 by the Virtual Reality Society of Japan, and was invited to exhibit their work at Laval Virtual 2015 in France. Their success at the International Collegiate Virtual Reality Contest is particularly meaningful as they won the grand prize amid tough competition with 10 finalist teams, including two from the Untied States and one from France, chosen out of 118 total entries.

All first- and second-year students in the Program reside in the Empowerment Dormitory. This award represents the high regard in which the judges held the way the team had achieved the interdisciplinary approach that the Program focuses on, through collaboration that began in the dormitory above and beyond the boundaries between laboratories.
