“Israel & イスラエル”is a dance performance developed through a two years in partnership with YCAM and dancer Israel Galván, to investigate new types of bodily expression with cutting-edge technologies.

I started to collaborate on this project while I was doing my Engineering Residency at YCAM InterLab (Nov. 2017-Feb. 2018). Then, I was invited to continue the collaboration and become part of team of creators and developers for this production.

“Israel & イスラエル”is a very innovative and engaging performance, where Israel Galván, an innovator and genius of flamenco confront his complex and physical art –for the first time- with sensors and AI technologies.

During the performance, the dancer will slowly morph from a human, to a sort of cyborg, and then will confront himself with another self, another version of Israel Galvan, an AI agent who learned from his art and will challenge him. At the end, the audience, in the dark, is left to answer to a question: who is the real dancer?

The production of this performance was full of technical and conceptual challenges. How to capture the fast and complex movements and rhythms of Israel Galvan’s shoes? How to allow him to extend his expressive possibilities? How the AI can be represented in a context of flamenco dance? How a human and a computational dancer will interact?

Working on this project was a really challenging, fun, and rewarding experience.
